The research questions that geoarchaeology is applied to range in scale from the microscopic to the global. The application of geoarchaeology to field archaeology is most usually at the level of the site or the context and is concerned with formation processes. However, the application of micromorphology and microanalytical techniques have been applied to the study of individual artefacts and artefact residues (references), soil mineral grains (references) and post-depositional precipitates (references). At the other end of the scale are studies into regional (references) and global (references) climatic shifts using for example stable isotope analysis.
