1. Part of a rock or sediment body differentiated from other parts by appearance or composition; can refer to one part of a sediment/rock body, different kinds of sediments/rocks, or stratigraphic bodies.

2. A lateral subdivision of a stratigraphic unit. Facies characterise a deposit as having been deposited in a given environment.
