[edit] Flint

Flint is a variety of chert found in chalk. It can have a range of colours depending on mineral impurities but is usually dark-grey, blue, black, or deep brown in colour. Flint was commonly used in the past for:

  • tools due to it forming sharp edges when struck;
  • a raw material for clay based ceramic bodies;
  • making fire as when struck against iron pyrites or steel will produce sparks;
  • flintlock firearms;
  • a building material.
