[edit] Iron Pan

A hardpan in which iron oxide is the principal cementing agent. Iron pans are formed in podzol soils and are also often found in buried archaeological deposits and buried soils associated with context boundaries and old buried turves and ground surfaces (turf lines). Iron pans in podzols are often formed by a different set of processes than those formed in waterlogged or buried deposits.
