[edit] Reduction

The process of losing oxygen to form reduced compounds. Reduction happens in wet, low oxygen environments. Organic compounds blacken and become stable; sulphur-rich compounds form iron sulphide (commonly pyrite) or hydrogen sulphide (a gas smelling of rotten eggs); and iron compounds turn green and become soluble.
