[edit] Thin Section

Thin, glass-mounted, slices of rock, pottery, or stabilised soil or sediment. These sections need to be thin enough to conduct light (typically 30-40 microns) so that the internal structure and organisation of the material can be examined using a petrological (geological) microscope. Soil and sediments are impregnated with resin before they are sliced and lapped to the required thickness.
