[edit] Uniformitarianism

A basic geological assumption that states that the processes that operate today have been operating throughout the earth's history as well. First proposed by James Hutton in the mid 1700s this allows geologists, and archaeologists, to explain the past history of the earth by the processes that we still see operating.
