[edit] Varve
A pair of thin layers of sediment forming an annual record of deposition in lake bottom sediments (particularly glacial lakes). Each varve typically consists one light coloured, coarse grained layer formed during spring floods, and one darker, fine-grained layer deposited during the winter when the lake surface is frozen.
