A soil that contains a high proportion a clay called montmorillonite. This clay swells as it gets wet and absorbs water and shrinks as it dries. Beause of this the soils are continually being mixed forming deep A horizons, and the surfaces rises and lowers forming a topography of hummocks known as Gilgai.
