Login to use the Field Tool

Please note that the field tool has a separate registration process from the rest of the SASSA website. Logging in to the SASSA website will not allow you to use the field tool. Follow the login link above to register and use the field tool. Registration is free and open to all.

The field tool includes two functions:

  • A guide to standardised soil description: This function provides an archiving tool, which guides the field archaeologist through the process of soil description and results in a standard soil description within a site archive.
  • Decision tool to aid interpretation of soils: These decision tools help the archaeologist address some of the most common field questions. The user is prompted to enter relevant soil properties based on which an interpretation is made.

This tool does NOT provide:

  • An alternative to a site-visit from an experienced geoarchaeologist.
  • An alternative to a context recording sheet.
  • Definitive answers to archaeological questions.
  • A means to forgo geoarchaeological post-excavation analysis.

The decision tool reflects the authors experience in United Kingdom based geoarchaeology.

The SASSA project is always looking for information on how the tools it has developed are being used. If you have used the SASSA Field Tool, please consider leaving us feedback via the following questionnaire.
